Workshops

Hi Everyone,

I would like to announce my upcoming workshop in June 2018! This will be a three-day landscape painting workshop on the beautiful New Hampshire coast.
The dates for the workshop are Tuesday, June 26th, through Thursday June 28th.

Goals of the workshop: Work on at least one painting from start to finish with guided instruction along the way. Painting landscapes in this way, over consecutive days, will help you to produce your best work to date and you may find that you complete 2 or 3 fresh new oil paintings.

Structure of the workshop: I will paint a demo on the first morning so that all of you will be able to see how I approach laying in a landscape as well as answer questions as I paint. I have learned a lot from watching other artists at work and I think you will find it helpful. After my demo we will take a break for lunch then each of you will set up and work on your own paintings as I give helpful instruction as you go along. If students are eager, we can extend the day and I can do a sunset demo or you can paint your own after a quick break for dinner. Of course, there is no obligation to stay late if you want to call it a day and go hit the Portsmouth night life which is happening! Lots of good restaurants and live music!

On the second day you can watch me work on my demo in the morning or paint alongside me during that time. The second day on a painting is exciting because its usually where you start to see real progress! Everything is pretty much in the correct place so now we are getting the values right and paying attention to color. We will break for lunch again and then you will work on your afternoon paintings while I work as your painting coach, giving you tips and strategy to pull off a winning painting!

The third day will be pretty much the same but at some point we will all get together and have a critique session where we look at all the work and discuss what we have accomplished.

Location of the workshop: Fort Stark at Jaffrey Point, which is a small state park in picturesque Newcastle, NH (which is part of Greater Portsmouth area). There are rocky beaches, rolling lawns and a hill where a gun emplacement used to protect the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. There are gorgeous ocean views on three sides of the park. All in all this park offers plenty to paint in the morning and afternoons. Although the park does offer porta-potties for its visitors, there are no other formal facilities. However, there is a great ice-cream /sandwich shop right down the street where we can get lunch, snacks and drinks.

Lodging: There are several lodging options for those of you who are not near by and need to stay over. The options range from lovely Wentworth By The Sea (Marriott) which is located right in Newcastle, to various other options along Rt 1 in Portsmouth and Rye area, or B&Bs, all of which will be within the 15 min drive range. If you need help with lodging ideas please let me know.

Cost of 3 day workshop: The cost is $300 for the 3 days. This cost includes the demos and hands-on instruction as you paint for the 3 days. I ask for half in advance to hold your place and the rest when you arrive.
